Garbage & Recycling

The City of Willowbay is committed to maintaining a clean and eco-friendly community through efficient garbage and recycling services. Here’s what you need to know to stay informed and make the most of our waste management programs.

Updated Pickup Schedule

Residential Areas:

  • Garbage Collection: Scheduled twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays. Please have your garbage out by 7 AM on these days.
  • Recycling Collection: Takes place every Wednesday. Ensure your recyclables are at the curb by 7 AM.

Commercial Districts:

  • Garbage Pickup: Conducted three times a week on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. This schedule helps keep our business areas clean and welcoming.
  • Recycling Collection: Scheduled for Tuesdays.

Guidelines for Effective Waste Management

  1. Separation of Waste: To support our recycling efforts and reduce landfill waste, please separate recyclables from general waste. Recyclables include paper, plastic, glass, and metal, while general waste consists of non-recyclable items.
  2. Bin Placement: Place your garbage and recycling bins at the curb by 7 AM on your designated pickup day. Ensure there is a minimum distance of 3 feet between bins to allow easy access for collection trucks.
  3. Special Disposal: For large items or hazardous waste, contact the Garbage & Recycling Department to arrange a special pickup. These items require careful handling and should not be placed in your regular bins.
  4. Requesting New or Replacement Bins: If you need a new recycling bin or need to report a damaged one, contact the Garbage & Recycling Department for assistance with replacement or repair.
  5. Recycling Guidelines: Please follow our Recycling Guidelines to understand which items can and cannot be recycled. Items such as plastic bags and food-contaminated containers should be disposed of in general waste.
  6. Seasonal Changes: Be aware of seasonal changes to the garbage and recycling schedule, such as holiday adjustments or weather-related delays. These updates will be posted on our website and communicated through local announcements.

Garbage collection in Willowbay occurs once a week. Collection days vary by neighborhood. You can find your specific pickup day by entering your address in the "Garbage Collection Schedule" tool on our website.

Yard waste, including leaves, branches, and grass clippings, is collected every other week from April through November. Place your yard waste in biodegradable bags or designated bins, and leave them at the curb on your scheduled yard waste collection day.

We accept the following items for curbside recycling:

  • Paper (newspapers, magazines, office paper)
  • Cardboard (flattened)
  • Plastic bottles and containers (#1-7)
  • Aluminum and steel cans
  • Glass bottles and jars

Bulky items such as furniture, mattresses, or appliances are collected during our quarterly Bulk Waste Pickup Days. Check the Bulk Pickup Schedule on our website for upcoming dates. You can also drop off these items at the city’s designated disposal facility for a fee.

Hazardous waste items, including paint, chemicals, batteries, and electronics, should not be placed in regular garbage or recycling bins. The City of Willowbay hosts an annual Hazardous Waste Collection Event, where residents can safely dispose of these items. Please visit our website for event dates and a list of accepted materials.
